How to Teach New Generation
In this article, you will learn how to teach the new generation (Generation Z). These are students who are in the generation z year range. They are not mini-Millennials. Those born roughly after 1995.
If you were born between 1980 and 1995, then you belong to Generation Y.
Although the world tends to focus on the millennial generation, the new generation is success-minded and more into technology from their early ages in school to higher education.
The millennials have since graduated and are now doctors, lawyers, and even CEOs of companies.
Ask any teacher and they will tell you that a Z classroom is full of distractions than a millennial classroom. Their brains are always occupied with things. The technology, new trends, fashion, etc.
Difference between Generation Z and Millennials
Every generation carries on traits of its preceding generation and Generation Z is no exception, although this generation differs a little bit. Most learning institutions and teachers find it challenging to get the difference between the two generations and this makes it hard to fine-tune their teaching suitably.
Generation Z is thought to have a straight-laced character. People of this age range are thought to be successful than their predecessors.
Moreover, most people of Generation Z started watching YouTube videos when they were as little as 3 years old from their parents’ smartphones. And that’s why they are more into technology than their predecessors.
How Does Generation Z Use Technology
They lack waiting time- Generation Z doesn’t wait. You cannot expect them to rent a movie or learn about a particular subject. They watch movies and learn about topics of interests on the internet when they need.
They think technology is for them- After all, members of Generation Z start using technology when they are 3 years old. It’s something that they have grown up with since their younger ages.
How to teach New Generation (or Generation Z)
As you will read in this article http://www.myzeo.com/blog/10-essential-tips-for-teachers-of-english/ it’s not easy to teach the new generation unless you have the tips and are knowledgeable about their likes and dislikes.
So how do you teach members of generation z year range?
Here are some helpful tips to help you.
1. Switch to Digital Learning
Millennials will use the handouts you give them, but Generation Z may not go past the first paragraph of the handouts. Think digital and find ways to store learning materials whether lectures or eBooks. The best way to store information is through the use of portals.
Generation Z is used to having information when they need it everywhere at any time and storing this information on portals make it accessible to them on demand.
2. Ditch the Long Lectures
Generation Z students are multi-taskers and therefore long lectures aren’t meant for them. Break long lectures into interesting bits and you will keep the class moving in one direction. They have a shorter attention span, unlike millennials.
3. Present Information Visually
To make information digestible to the new generation, use memes, and emojis. The new generation likes information that is visual than textual. They love images and they will lose attention quickly if presented with large blocks of texts and lengthy lectures.
Switch to charts, images, and graphics, a combination of words and images and different types of media to keep their attention in class.
Other ways to teach new generation is to be relevant, embrace personal devices, personalize learning, etc.
